Jenna Sclafani (she/her)

Education Director & Group Teacher

Jenna has been an early childhood educator in Brooklyn, NY since 2016. A lover of all creatures big and small makes celebrating nature with children a very joyful experience. She received her Masters in Early Childhood Education from Brooklyn College, and is New York State certified in general and special education.

In her research study at Brooklyn College, Jenna brought foraged natural materials from local public green spaces as well as donated materials from parents and neighborhood vendors to her classroom to be used for fine motor play activities. The materials were zero cost, zero waste, and developmentally appropriate for pre-kindergarten age children. She often presented them as “gifts from the forest,” and let the children discover the many ways in which they could be used. She recorded how much of the natural world the students began to notice over time when they took their weekly walk outside--their only exposure to the outdoors during their school day. The students showed a 25% increase in awareness and inquiry of their natural surroundings after only 3 months of replacing manufactured toys in the classroom with those from the students' natural environment. The study was halted due to the school closure of COVID-19, but Jenna has continued to find ways of bringing “gifts from the forest” to each of her students everyday. She loves to forage, hike, and ride her bike, and lives at home with her two cats. Jenna is certified in Infant, Child, and Adult CPR, and First Aid.
